GLAMFA 2020: Double Play

The graduate students at CSU Long Beach and members of Fine Arts Roundtable (FAR) have hosted the Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Arts (GLAMFA) Exhibition since 2005. GLAMFA is one of the largest student-conceived and organized art events in both the CSULB School of Art and in Southern California history. In the past, it has functioned as a juried survey of Southern California MFA students. Since 2018, we have inspired to move beyond a juried “Best of Show” presentation, and instead create a conversation amongst Southern California MFA students and our practices. This year we hope to foster a community of artists interested in collaboration. This year’s exhibition is the culmination of that effort. The GLAMFA 2020: Double Play exhibition will feature a range of conversations between MFA students from UC Santa Barbara, Claremont, USC, UC Irvine, Otis, CSU Northridge, ArtCenter College of Design, and UC San Diego.

This exhibition was comprised of a plethora of collaborative projects. We are pleased to present a  range of conversations – be it through physical meetings with students from other Southern California institutions, image and text sharing, or social/political or other dialogues that develop through the curatorial process. We showcased a range of pieces, from stand-alone  to full installations in among our several gallery spaces during the exhibition time.

Many participants have done the following collaborative models:

— Thematic compatibility
— Response pieces or duets
— Process-oriented practices that can develop cohesively
— Open works in which another artist could “finish,” install, or develop further.
–Direct collaboration between students from different schools

It is our continual hope to provide a space to explore and share knowledge that gives insight into the different Southern Californian MFA programs and differing theoretical approaches to art making!

 Artist Panel Discussion

January 28, 2020: UT-108 5-7pm

The annual GLAMFA panels have provided an excellent platform for artists and creative professionals within the spheres of cultural production to exchange ideas with each other and the panel audience. Unlike standard artist’s lectures, the GLAMFA panel serves as a genuine and somewhat less formal avenue for discussion between peers. This allows for insight into pertinent cultural themes, concerns among contemporary artists, and legitimate working challenges facing the next generation of artists.

GLAMFA 2019: Open Relationships

At the start of each spring semester, a symposium of CSU Long Beach MFA students, known as the Fine Arts Roundtable (FAR) presents the Greater Los Angeles master of Fine Arts Exhibition (GLAMFA) in conjunction with CSULB Open Studios. Historically GLAMFA has been a juried exhibition. For GLAMFA 2019 we wanted to build a show around shared practices, collaboration, and community. MFA students from universities throughout Southern California were invited to submit images and writing about their practices. During the application process, we prioritized artists most interested in engaging with others artistically. Selected artists were then matched according to similar aesthetic or theoretical interests. Once matched, artists were free to determine the parameters of their exchange. This ranged from casual correspondence and independently produced work to direct physical collaboration. Open Relationships is the culmination of several months of shared effort by artists from nine different Southern California universities: UC Santa Barbara, Claremont, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, Otis, CSU Northridge, ArtCenter College of Design, and Cal Arts.

For the last 12 years, the Greater Los Angeles MFA show (GLAMFA) brings together the best work of graduate students putting the spotlight on emerging trends in contemporary art. GLAMFA is organized and curated by CSULB students in the Cal State University Long Beach Art Galleries. From January 23 to February 1, 2017, twenty-eight MFA students from twelve of California’s best art schools will be taking part.

While not every artwork is California focused, the specific conditions in Greater Los Angeles certainly influence the way to look at the work as a whole. GLAMFA’s long list of artists shows an exceptional network of young artists and practices. The work seen in GLAMFA is both encouraging and crucial. The work shows the importance of educational time spent meditating on practice and theory and that each piece speaks to a critical moment in time for the artist and for art itself.

On opening night, CSULB students host an Open Studio event which allows visitors to see works from a broad range of genres. Opening night visitors can also look forward to a performance by UCSB student Emily Baker. A former gymnast, Emily’s work explores the body and the transience of athleticism.

This year, GLAMFA is pleased to bring back three alumni to discuss how their practice has evolved since grad school. Zackary Drucker (GLAMFA 2007), Patricia Fernandez (GLAMFA 2010), and Katie Shapiro (GLAMFA 2015) will each give a short talk on the evening of January 31st.

GLAMFA 2015

“Once upon a time, eleven years ago, students at California State University Long Beach were left out of MFA student exhibitions – Long Beach itself being left by the wayside.  So, according to artist and coordinator Kimberly Morris, “We built our own sandbox and now everyone plays in it.” Today, the Greater Los Angeles MFA survey exhibition is a powerhouse of art curated by CSULB grad students, and drawing submissions from as far away as Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, and San Diego. Combined with the opening panel, reception, and exhibition held this past Sunday afternoon, students’ open studios were offered for the art-browsing. Different this year, according to Morris, was that “members of our panel also have their own work on exhibit this year.” Art being a visual medium, let the pictures that follow tell the story – and do go see this exhibit, running through September 3rd on the CSULB campus at the Fine Arts building. What are you waiting for? Jump on the 405 or the 710! Parking, like the exhibit itself, is free.”

GLAMFA 2014

ABOUT GLAMFA #10

“Every September something truly unique happens at California State University Long Beach. The Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Art Exhibition, GLAMFA for short. For the past ten years GLAMFA has been showcasing the work of graduate students from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Las Vegas and all points between. That is not really all that different form other annual or biennial exhibitions of graduate work. What makes GLAMFA stand apart are its consistent quality and distinct approach to curation. This year, as every year previous, the exhibition was curated by graduate students and CSULB. Peers selecting the work of peers. Coinciding with Open Studios, the CSULB graduate students present their work in their studios along side the very best of the region in GLAMFA.

It was designed this way. GLAMFA grew out of the desire for inclusion in the greater Los Angeles graduate community. In 2005, after attempting to join the then popular survey of MFA’s in LA called Supersonic, a group of students approached the Director of the School of Art at CSULB about taking over all of the school’s student gallery spaces and presenting their own exhibition at the beginning of the Fall semester. An exhibition that would be open to submissions from all graduate schools in the area and would bring LA to Long Beach.

Each Spring the student organizers visit the open studios around town where they start looking at works, generate connections, and foster community. Over the years they have shown innovative and imaginative works across genres–encompassing public projects, performance, sound, film and video, and net art and gaming.

So here we are ten years later. After passing through many hands, GLAMFA remains true to it’s original intentions. As you can see flipping through the past exhibition website archives, artists who are now making their marks on the art world have exhibited at GLAMFA. MOCA Engagement Party featured artist Liz Glynn, Writer and Director of 323 Projects Tucker Neal, and Creative Capital Grantee Akosua Adoma Owusu to name a few.

This year certainly holds the same potential as years past and features some outstanding works. Representing Cal Arts, CSUF, CSUN, CSULA, Claremont, OTIS, UCI, UCLA, UCSB, UNLV, and USC. The chosen works address many of the issues in the current cultural conversation, the shifting nature of gender, feminism, technology, and political climates, but also re-occurring themes such as the landscape of Southern California, and the state of the academy that grants the terminal degree each of these artists is seeking. What ties them all together is the strength of their voice and the location from which they speak.

Collaborative AIRP, the Artist in Residence Project, features artists Jennifer Frias and Christina Lee from California State University Fullerton. Intervening in retail environments, they create and document guerrilla compositions. Reminiscent of geometric abstractions, their installations are publicly staged unsanctioned ephemeral artworks that live on in photographic documentation. Stacked glasses and bottles on store shelving are playful in nature. Perhaps more benevolent than some of the more trickster style interventions that are regularly seen, their touch work is genuinely engaging in a conversation about art as intentional manipulation of color and form, basic academic principles that are placed into application in a banal context that is very hopeful in nature. Seeking to generate a dialogue about aesthetics more than commodity.

Noé Gaytán from Otis is engaging in a different dialogue about commodity and the academy. In a very timely project, not just because of the artist’s current status as a graduate student but because it comes at a time when student financial aid and debt load versus the earning potential and effectiveness of academic fine art education has come in to question. Using screen-printing techniques to efficiently generate multiples Noé Gaytán is printing his own money – each dollar in the cost of his graduate education in an attempt to offset the monetary burden of taking on higher-education. Considering the trend of self-funding of art projects using online platforms such as kickstarter and indie go-go, the artist takes it a step further into crowd funding a degree instead of relying upon the federal system of loans. The project elegantly and effectively points towards the problems that all of the artists in this exhibition face.

Digital manipulation of both the photograph and the printer is how Evan Trine from Claremont is creating one of a kind abstract photographs. The artist subverts the multiple nature of the digital photograph by tweaking the machines that being them into a physical state. The brightly saturated final works move forward from the glitch aesthetic into a sophisticated manipulation of information. Grain and pixel reference low light images, attempts to capture visual information where they is little to be seen. Evan Trine’s consideration of how the ease of digital reproduction and image capture can be reversed upon itself to create unique work is a reflection of the questions that have been facing art making as technology becomes better at producing and reproducing.

The Southern California landscape has inspired many. For good reason. Susanna Battin from CalArts however, layers the form of the freeway with language in her works. Merging colors and simple semiotics as gleaned from navigating nature via the unique highway system of the region, Susanna Battin highlights the impact of information expressed at terminal velocity. From staccato sign sentences to phoning the poppies to see if they are in bloom, she successfully incorporates the wonder that is inherent in the area with the speed at which it is now experienced. Her investigations are a fitting expression of contemporary life in a place where we live steps from the ocean but rarely find time to swim.

It is this environment though, this region, that cultivates creativity. Year after year, new artists enter and add to the discourse. Arguably it is the strength of the MFA programs that make Los Angeles such a vibrant art community. The exceptional artists from the eleven institutions who are represented this year are a testament to the quality of work being made across the area. GLAMFA has certainly made a contribution by bringing them all together for the past ten years and hopefully for many years to come.”

GLAMFA 2010

The Fine Arts Roundtable (FAR) from California State University, Long Beach begins this academic year by presenting the Greater Los Angeles Master of Fine Art Exhibition (GLAMFA). It is one of the largest student-conceived and organized art events in both the CSULB Department of Art and in Southern California history. Now in its sixth year, GLAMFA is devoted to generating and maintaining an active dialogue among emerging artists in MFA programs across Southern California. Over 70 artists will be represented at the GLAMFA / Open Studios event. GLAMFA is the preeminent regional MFA exhibition for the Southern California area. The show aims to generate and maintain an active dialogue between an emerging generation of LA artists and its public.

GLAMFA 2010, displayed more than 40 works in a variety of mediums, will occupy five CSULB art department galleries and several alternative spaces throughout the art department. This year’s program represents 10 schools: California Institute of the Arts, Claremont Graduate University, CSU Fullerton, CSU Northridge, Otis College of Art and Design, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara.

FAR will bring together MFAs from several schools across Southern California and students (and alumni) from CSULB in a round table discussion. Moderated by GLAMFA coordinators, the panelists will be asked to explore a range of issues, beginning with their individual practices and moving into collective topics, including parallel concepts and themes in the show. These include identity politics, social histories, the influence of the MFA institution, the place of materiality in art making, and what it means to be an emerging artist in Southern California.
