Help Yourself, 2017
After moving to Los Angeles from Siberia, Russia in 2001, Wolek attended Santa Monica College Mentor Program, and obtained her Bachelor degree in Fine Arts and Art History at University of California, Los Angeles in 2012, and currently working on MFA degree at California State University Long Beach. Wolek’s art works have been selected for various exhibitions in the United States and abroad.
Lena Wolek’s art is inspired by the range of ideological, social, economic, and political fundamentals of rapid contemporary global development. Having grown up in a small town in Siberia where some folk customs are still the norm, and then adapting to cosmopolitan Los Angeles, she has a point on fascination with observing and analyzing the recent and rapid changes in both societies. This allows her the unique ability to integrate observations of value and loss in both social contexts, in order to compare and contrast the mentality and cultural attitudes of the two.
